Sail Away

Okay, we have at least two things going on here.
First, in the background, we have the Colony. About a thousand years ago, a race from the far side of the galaxy built it as a refuge. Their planet fell into disarray from chaos both industrial and unnatural. In a desperate act, they were forced to sever any and all contact they had with other races, craft a new home, and set out on their own. They now are drifting somewhere between the Milky Way and the Sagittarius dwarf Galaxies, easily self-sustained, but far from comfortable or everlasting.
In the foreground, we have the remnants of their connections to civilization. These miniaturized solar-sailors are fast- capable of about 100 kilometers per second- but can only sustain themselves for a matter of days. Of course, this is nowhere near fast enough to travel any more than the length of a standard solar system. They can, however, efficiently relay electromagnetic signals in any direction. Of course, even those only travel three times faster than the ships themselves. They may never be heard.
That doesn't mean that they should stop trying.
