Eerok- Scourge of the Wastes

Submission for 2013 Creature Cabal.
Sorry to keep you guys waiting. Some of the hijinks in the animation kept production busy. This one hardly made it through.
Anyways, this little pint of nightmare fuel came after spending way too long experimenting with undiscovered dinosaur species. It lived during the early Cretaceous in what would eventually become China. The particular area where it lived experienced an unusual burst of volcanic activity at the turn of the epoch, resulting in vast, dry lava tubes that crossed the landscape. Since traversing over the top of them is hazardous (some have grown hundreds of feet deep), most animals had to navigate its massive labyrinth to migrate.
That's where these guys come in. Over the course of millions of years, their saliva has developed acidic bonding properties. That, coupled with its relatively high intelligence, means that they can build elaborate traps to capture prey. Some have even formed colonies to build massive web-like structures, allowing them to capture prey as big as the sauropods.
However, as the canyon systems eroded away, so did the multiple paths and places to build such structures. Needing the shadows, the Eerok faded out of existence...
