War of the Worlds- Thunderchild

Another excerpt from "the War of the Worlds" by H.G. Wells. You may remember the Martian Sentinel from earlier this month.
Anyways, here's the backstory. After the martians landed in England, everything was thrown into a panic. Everybody tried to get out of the country as quickly as they could, but the aliens were that much faster. The last boat from London was nearly intercepted by the tripods. The only thing between the Martians and innocent blood was the military vessel R.M.S. Thunderchild. With its cannons alight, it raced into the oncoming troupe of war machines, ramming into one and pushing it into the ocean. However, as valiant as it was, it was quickly torn to pieces by the martian heat-ray that the beings carried. This bought enough time for the civilians to escape, but the destruction of that one vessel meant the destruction of the last remaining boat in the British Navy.
The Earth now belongs to the martians...
