the Blasphemer Troll

Submission for the 2019 Creature Cabal

It's no secret that natural sciences were entirely undeveloped in Europe throughout most of the middle ages, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Amidst the superstition-ridden tomes of the German monasterZwischenweltenbrücke are a handful of secret passages of rudimentary naturalism. Not much is known about the monks who crafted them- perhaps they were made by a few rebellious friars to try and portray the beauty of God's work. What is known is that, with the exception of a few anatomical errors, the seventeen pages on record are remarkably detailed and passionately exposited on the surrounding flora and fauna. If it was to show God's work, then surely He would have looked on it in pride.
Except for the piece that didn't fit in. Some of the pages describe creatures that didn't quite fit in with the monks' understanding of the world. The man between man and beast grew thin. Life and death became mere words. Wonder turned to horror as the roads became crowded with true monsters.
Perhaps the pages were hidden for this reason...
