Our next short takes us back to Germany in the late Jurassic (or at least a drawing of it) where one of the most bizarre flying reptiles hunted the forest canopies. The minute pterosaur Anurognathus and its relatives traded their ancestor's beaks for short faces and agile wings -- perfect for catching insects on the wing.

This one project had a lot of firsts for me. In eevee, it was my first real test with fur particles as well as pterosaur wings (which, if you’re unfamiliar with them, aren’t built quite like bats’ wings, meaning I couldn’t just put a cloth sim on it and call it a day). On the desk, the fly was my first successful attempt at the NLA editor, which ended up working well for its erratic, jerky movement that we all expect from insects.

I’m still not sure what happened with the paper. I put a cloth simulation on it when the pterosaur rammed into it, and it worked pretty well in the viewport. I didn’t notice it clipping through the desktop in the final render until after the whole thing was rendered, and by then, I only had a day to edit and add the foley, so it’s just sorta there in the video now. If you guys have any tips on how to avoid that in the future, I’d be more than grateful to hear them.

As always, let me know what you think!
