Submission for the 2020 Creature Cabal

The legends are always true. Just not in the way you think.

Sailors in the northern Atlantic have told stories of an immortal sea monster, not unlike a squid or octopus, monstrous and grotesque. This last-of-its-kind demon could fell the mightiest ships with a single swipe of its arm, and marked the edge of the world, warding wayfarers away from the emptiness beyond.

Of course, most of that is false. It isn't immortal; the oldest one is only a hundred years old or so, and its armor, though impervious to most human weapons, limits its flexibility compared to other cephalopods. It isn't gigantic; it can only reach thirty meters in length. And, finally, it isn't alone: it swarms in schools.

Hopefully, that makes you feel a little better when you patrol its territory.
