John Glenn Memorial Space Elevator

Is it bad that I supremely goofed on drawing the American Flag the weekend of memorial day?
Oh well. In this one instance, I'd say the idea I'm trying to go for is bigger than a flag. whether I mean the idea of a space elevator, or the building design.
An elevator like this (i.e., one that ties directly to a space station, allowing for easier access to and from micro-gravity and, thus, easier study on how to expand space-ward) would be a monumental project that would unite the world by pure necessity of its workforce. First, we'd need a team of chemists and engineers working on the perfect material to send up there- one that can withstand the conditions of upper-atmosphere radiation and weather without collapsing on itself. Next, either a team of astronauts willing to go up and start building it downward or an even bigger team of constructors bruilding it upward. It would need supplies for food, fuel, power, and so many different requirements. A project of this size may or may not cost as much as the entire world's gross domestic product.
But is that not worth the end result for humanity? A boost towards the edge of the universe?
